A Princess Castle ... and the Stored Up Goodness of God

Something tall and pink caught my eye at a garage sale last week, and I made a quick decision to turn into the long driveway. Did you catch the word “pink”? I’ll soon be a first-time grandmother to a baby girl. After raising boys, the anticipation tastes like thick sweet cupcake icing, and I can’t wait. It’s going to be good.

The tall pink “thing” turned out to be a princess castle, covered with stars that glow in the dark. The inside is large enough to accommodate a tea party for a preschooler and her Nana — if I crawl in and sit cross-legged! The age requirement says 3+ (and please note that it doesn’t give an age limit on the other end of the age spectrum), so the castle is folded up and tucked away in the linen closet. Waiting.

There’s something about the pretend stage of growing up that I love. I saved the bridesmaid dresses I wore in my sisters’ weddings, with hopes of filling a chest with dress-up clothes for potential granddaughters. The dream is becoming a reality. Frilly hats, dainty heels, and pretty beads are on my mental shopping list.

I have a soft spot for children’s books and am imagining a reading nook in the basement. I may or may not have already begun collecting books (don’t judge me); after all, I’m storing up experiences and good things for my granddaughter. Oh, and have I mentioned ... it’s going to be good?!

Like a grandparent storing gifts and good experiences for her grandchildren when they grow into them, our Heavenly Father also stores good for those who fear him.

“How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you. In the presence of everyone you have acted for those who take refuge in you.” (Psalm 31:19 CSB)

I love this! God stores up good for those who fear him. I don’t want to miss anything He has for me in the future or what’s already right in front of my face!

I already have stars that glow at night — a whole sky full of them. Plus, a sun to light the day. I enjoy the sound effects of a menagerie of birds and floral decor that changes with the seasons. He’s given me family and friends — some very special people to share life with. I even have room for “tea parties” at my kitchen table, with no age requirement—all this goodness from His hand.

Beyond the physical blessings, He gives spiritual gifts. He gives peace that passes understanding and unconditional love. He gives hope regardless of circumstances and swelling joy that’s undeniably from Him. He lights the dark. He feeds the hungry. He allows us to participate in His work here on earth, and helps us do things we never thought we could or would do.

He prepares a forever place for His children and looks forward to sharing it with us ... kind of like a grandmother preparing a place for her granddaughter. Pink and glowing and roomy.

And if I haven’t said it too many times already ... it’s going to be good. I can almost taste the icing.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8 CSB)
