What to do When the Work Feels Hard

Sometimes abiding can feel like work.

There are times when I feel like I am fighting for my place. The tasks I’m trying to accomplish feel overwhelming. I don’t look forward to the work I’m doing for the Lord, but instead, put them off as long as possible and then try to get by.

Or, I feel like I am running upstream, against the currents. I try to do what I feel God has given me to do, and it just feels like it isn’t working, that nothing is coming together.

Why does that happen?

Easy. I am trying my hardest to do everything my way. I’m finding work to do instead of watching for God to show me what He wants me to do. Then, once I finally listen and decide what He wants me to do, I try to do it on my own.

Sisters, that doesn’t work. There is nothing we can do apart from the Lord. He gives us the desire, the energy, the intelligence, and the drive. He even gives us the love we have for Him and the willingness to obey. He turns our hearts toward Him and provides the longing to know Him.

When the work feels hard, lean on Him.

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9(ESV)

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV)

Lord, thank You for the work You give us. It is such an honor to work to further Your Kingdom. Help us to remember that You are working through our weakness so that we will rely on Your strength. We desire to bring You glory, and we know You are able to accomplish more than we could ever imagine. Your grace is sufficient. Remind us as we go about our busy lives doing the work that You have given us to rely on Your grace and strength, not our own. We love You, Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen.
